Big Canoe Leader Training Introduction and Intermediate
Date: May 23, 2026, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Lower Reach Park, Smiths Falls, Ontario
(lots of free parking on site)
The fees are donations to the Rideau Roundtable.
Paddle Canada BIG CANOE INTERMEDIATE LEADER COURSE #89705-
- Duration: 7 hours
- Cost: $150
- Price includes certification with Paddle Canada
and INTRO TO BIG CANOE COURSE #89706
- Duration: 4 hours
- Cost: $75
Both courses will be taught simultaneously by canoe master MAX FINKELSTEIN and assistants.
The Intermediate 1-day course:
- teaches you how to manoeuvre a big canoe with ease
- shows you how to rescue a capsized big canoe, and
- qualifies you to lead a day trip in a big canoe with inexperienced paddlers, controlling the canoe from the stern.
- includes practice and skill testing—you will get wet!
Prerequisites: You must be an experienced flat-water paddler in tandem canoes or have taken the Intro Lake Tandem Paddler Course, St. Johns First Aid or equivalent and CPR (you can get this later!)
